What is a CSV splitter?
A CSV splitter divides one CSV file into multiple smaller CSV files. This is useful when a dataset is too large to handle conveniently, or when you need separate files for different groups of records.
MK Tech Tools lets you split CSV data in two ways: by a fixed number of rows per file, or by unique values in a selected column.
How to split a CSV file online
- Upload a CSV file or paste CSV data.
- Select the delimiter used by the file.
- Choose whether the first row contains column headings.
- Choose either Split by row count or Split by column value.
- Configure the split options.
- Click Split CSV.
- Download individual files or download all generated files.
Split CSV by row count
Row-based splitting creates smaller files containing a fixed number of data rows. For example, a CSV containing 10,000 records can be divided into ten files containing 1,000 rows each.
If the final file contains fewer rows than the selected limit, it is still created normally with the remaining records.
Split CSV by column value
Column-based splitting creates a separate CSV file for each unique value found in a selected column.
For example, if a dataset contains a department column with values such as IT, HR and Finance, the tool can create separate CSV files for each department.
CSV split example
Suppose your CSV contains:
name,department Ali,IT Sara,HR David,IT Ayesha,Finance John,HR
If you split by the department column, the tool creates separate files for IT, HR and Finance.
The IT file would contain:
name,department Ali,IT David,IT
Why split large CSV files?
Large CSV files can be difficult to open, share, import or process. Splitting a dataset into smaller files can make it easier to work with spreadsheets, databases, data-analysis software and systems that have file-size or row-count limits.
Common uses for CSV splitting
CSV splitting is useful for large exports, mailing lists, survey datasets, regional records, departmental reports, transaction data, system logs and files that need to be distributed to different teams or applications.
CSV Splitter vs CSV Merger
A CSV Splitter takes one dataset and divides it into multiple files. A CSV Merger does the opposite by combining multiple compatible CSV files into one dataset.
Does this CSV splitter upload my file?
No. The CSV file is parsed and split locally in your browser. Your CSV data does not need to be uploaded to MK Tech Tools for processing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a large CSV file?
Upload or paste the CSV, choose Split by row count, enter the number of rows you want in each file and click Split CSV.
Can I split CSV by a column value?
Yes. Choose Split by column value, load the available columns and select the field you want to use for grouping.
Can I split CSV into files of 1,000 rows each?
Yes. Set Rows per file to 1000 and the tool will create as many files as needed.
Does each split file keep the header row?
