What is a CSV to JSON converter?
A CSV to JSON converter transforms data stored in CSV, or comma-separated values, into JSON format. CSV represents tabular information as rows and columns, while JSON represents information using objects, arrays, keys and values.
MK Tech Tools lets you paste CSV text or upload a CSV file and convert it into JSON directly in your browser. When the first CSV row contains column headings, those headings can automatically become the property names in each JSON object.
CSV to JSON example
Suppose your CSV contains:
name,age,city Ali,32,Islamabad Sara,28,Lahore
With the first row treated as headers, the equivalent JSON is:
[
{
"name": "Ali",
"age": "32",
"city": "Islamabad"
},
{
"name": "Sara",
"age": "28",
"city": "Lahore"
}
]How to convert CSV to JSON
- Paste your CSV data into the input box or upload a CSV file.
- Choose the delimiter used by your file: comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
- Leave First row is header enabled when the first CSV row contains column names.
- Enable Pretty JSON if you want indented, human-readable JSON.
- Click Convert CSV to JSON.
- Copy the converted JSON or download it as a JSON file.
What is CSV?
CSV stands for comma-separated values. It is a simple text format commonly used to exchange tabular data between spreadsheets, databases, statistical software and other applications.
Although commas are common, similar files may use semicolons, tabs or pipe characters as delimiters. This converter supports those common delimiter styles.
What is JSON?
JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation. It is a structured text format widely used by APIs, websites, applications, configuration files and data-processing systems.
JSON can represent arrays, objects and nested data structures, which makes it more flexible than a simple row-and-column CSV file.
CSV vs JSON
| Feature | CSV | JSON |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Rows and columns | Objects and arrays |
| Typical use | Spreadsheets and tabular exports | APIs and applications |
| Nested data | Not naturally supported | Supported |
| Human readable | Yes | Yes |
| Common extension | .csv | .json |
CSV headers and JSON keys
When a CSV file includes a header row, those header values normally become JSON property names. For example, CSV columns named name, age and city become keys in each generated JSON object.
If your CSV does not contain a header row, disable the header option. The converter will then return each CSV row as a JSON array instead of creating named object properties.
Does this CSV to JSON converter upload my data?
No. The CSV parsing and JSON conversion are performed locally in your web browser. Your CSV content does not need to be sent to MK Tech Tools for conversion.
Browser-based processing is particularly useful when working with ordinary business or technical data that you prefer not to upload unnecessarily.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a CSV file to JSON?
Upload your CSV file, select the appropriate delimiter and header option, then click Convert CSV to JSON. You can copy the result or download it as a JSON file.
Can I paste CSV instead of uploading a file?
Yes. You can paste CSV text directly into the input area and convert it without uploading a file.
Can CSV headers become JSON keys?
Yes. When First row is header is enabled, the column headings are used as property names in each JSON object.
Does the converter support semicolon-separated CSV?
Yes. You can select comma, semicolon, tab or pipe as the delimiter.
Does CSV to JSON conversion preserve data types?
CSV is fundamentally text-based, so values are returned as strings by default. A value such as 32 will therefore normally appear as the string "32" rather than automatically being converted to a numeric JSON value.
Can I download the converted JSON?
Yes. After conversion, use Download JSON to save the result as a .json file.
Is my CSV uploaded to a server?
No. This converter processes CSV data locally in your browser.
