Map coded values to labels online
The Value Label Mapper converts coded values into readable descriptive labels. For example, a variable containing 1, 2 and 3 can be converted into labels such as Male, Female and Other.
The original coded variable is preserved and a new label variable is appended as the final column in your CSV or Excel dataset.
Similar to value labels in SPSS
Statistical software such as SPSS commonly uses numeric codes with descriptive value labels. This tool provides a simple browser-based way to convert those coded values into an actual text variable that can be used in Excel, CSV files and other applications.
Value mapping example
Original code Label 1 Male 2 Female 3 Other
A dataset containing a variable named sex_code can therefore gain another variable called sex_label.
name,sex_code,sex_label Ali,1,Male Sara,2,Female John,3,Other

- Download the labelled dataset.
Common uses
Value labels are useful for survey data, demographic variables, questionnaire codes, categorical datasets, administrative data, monitoring systems and statistical analysis.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert numeric codes to text labels online?
Yes. Select the coded variable and define the label corresponding to each original value.
Does this replace my original coded variable?
No. The original variable is preserved and a new labelled variable is appended at the end.
Can I use text codes instead of numbers?
Yes. Original values can also be text values such as M, F, Yes, No or other codes.
What happens to values I do not map?
You can leave them blank, keep their original value, or assign a custom label such as Unknown.
Can I use Excel files?
Yes. XLSX and XLS are supported in addition to CSV.
Is this similar to SPSS value labels?
It serves a related purpose by translating coded values into readable labels, although the tool creates a new label variable rather than attaching metadata labels to the original variable.
Is my dataset uploaded?
No. Processing takes place locally in your browser.
