Shapefile Viewer Online

Upload a zipped shapefile, view its geographic features on an interactive map and inspect feature attributes directly in your browser.

Step 1

Upload a zipped shapefile

Place the .shp, .dbf, .shx and optional .prj files together inside a ZIP file, then upload it below.

Your shapefile is processed in the browser. This viewer does not require you to upload the GIS dataset to a separate processing server.

View shapefiles online without desktop GIS software

The MK Tech Tools Shapefile Viewer lets you open and inspect shapefile data directly in your browser. Upload a ZIP file containing the shapefile components and the geographic features will be displayed on an interactive map.

The viewer can be used for polygon, line and point datasets, making it useful for administrative boundaries, survey areas, roads, facilities, GPS locations and other GIS layers.

What is a shapefile?

A shapefile is a widely used GIS format developed for storing geographic features and their attributes. A shapefile normally consists of several related files rather than a single file.

.shp

Stores the geographic geometry such as points, lines or polygons.

.dbf

Stores the attribute table associated with the geographic features.

.shx

Provides the index connecting shapefile geometry records.

.prj

Describes the coordinate reference system when included.

How to use the online shapefile viewer

  1. 1. Put the shapefile components such as .shp, .dbf and .shx into a ZIP file.
  2. 2. Upload the ZIP file using the viewer above.
  3. 3. The map will automatically zoom to the uploaded GIS layer.
  4. 4. Click a point, line or polygon to inspect its attribute values.

Browser-based GIS processing

The shapefile is read and processed in your browser. This keeps the workflow fast and also provides a reusable foundation for additional tools such as polygon merging, shapefile combining and browser-based GIS editing.

Current limitations

This first version is designed primarily for viewing ordinary zipped shapefiles. Very large GIS datasets can require substantial browser memory and may take longer to render. Editing and exporting will be introduced through separate GIS tools.
